As the holiday season approaches, the notion of ‘charity’ is one that can come in many forms.

Residents in Lexington, KT, for example, have taken that idea to heart. Once again this year they can pay-off their parking tickets with canned food donations instead of cash.

The “Food for Fines” program requires that donations are based on the monetary amount of the fine incurred.

For example, a $15 fine requires a donation of ten, 15-ounce cans of food, according to the Good News Network.

Last year, the city of Lexington collected over 6,000 cans of food, which would amount to around 600 violations or $14,000 cash.

The “Food for Fines” program runs through December 18th.
