Texas lawyer runs 113 marathons in 2011

On Saturday December 31st 2011, San Antonio trial lawyer R. Laurence Macon celebrated his 67th birthday. He also celebrated the completion of his 113rd marathon — of the year.

"It's a great birthday day," Macon told Reuters after finishing the New Year's Double Marathon in Allen, Texas.

The feat is a record-breaking one. The current world record for most marathons run in a single year is 106, set by South Korea's IM Chae Ho in 2009 and matched by Macon last year.

"If Larry did complete the 113 marathons and sends in required documentation for our records management team to review, he will have broken the current record," wrote Sara Wilcox, a Guinness public relations and marketing assistant, in an email to Reuters.

Macon didn't start running until he was 49. While he makes no attempt to break speed records — his fastest race was four hours, 45 minutes —he has been known to run seven marathons in a week, even holding conference calls on the run.

"The opposing counsel doesn't seem to be bothered by my heavy breathing," he said of a call during the Boston Marathon.

He says he hopes his habit will inspire other middle-aged people "to get some exercise and have some fun."

In 2009, Runner's World followed Macon on a three-marathon weekend. Meet the runner below:

"I have left specific instructions that if I die on the course, my friends are supposed to drag my body down the rest of the course and across the finish line," he said. "And then lie about the results," Macon said.
