Toronto couple retires after 50 years in the knitting business

A Cincinnati girl is trying to help kids be kids again, by donating dolls to patients at Children's Hospital. Each doll is courtesy her two little hands and a knitting loom.

Leonard and Mae Fine opened their Toronto-based knitting business, Marni Knits, on Dufferin Street more than 50 years ago.

Now in their 90s, the couple is finally retiring — because their son, who is also set to retire, urged them to.

Leonard and Mae met in New York in 1938. They found success in Toronto with their business, Marni Knits, that specialized in high-end knitted garments. CBC News reports that the couple's wares were sold at some of Canada's top retailers, including Holt Renfrew.

And while they've been together an impressive 75 years, Mae insists, "It's not long enough."

Now in their 90s, the Fines are closing up shop — but are still looking forward to a vibrant, active future.

"We had a life," Mae told CBC News. "We're still going to have a life, without the business. I may get a job, volunteering or something."
