U.S. Airman surprises 5-year-old son after tour in Guam

Byron Harrill, 5, has been missing his father for much of the boy's short life.

Byron's dad, U.S. Airman Tyler Harrill, left his family's Indian Trail, North Carolina, home two and a half years ago for a lengthy tour in Guam.

Last Thursday, Harrill planned a surprise reunion for his son at Byron's elementary school.

"I thought I was never going to see you again," Byron told his dad as the father-son duo walked out of the veteran's assembly together.

"I told my mommy that I missed him a lot and I couldn’t feel his skin touch when he touched me some days," Byron later told WSCO TV.

"He said he never thought I was ever coming back, which made me sad. But then he told me that he loved me and missed me. That just meant the world," Harrill said.

Harrill is home for just 15 days — "We're going to get in as much as we can, enjoy holiday, Thanksgiving, his birthday and do a lot of hanging out," Harrill told WSCO TV. Harrill is set to complete his tour for good in one more year.
