On snow days, Tommy Adams clears snow and ice from driveways and sidewalks in his neighbourhood.

On a recent blustery day, the high school senior from Nottoway County, Virginia, was riding in a car with his mother, Teresa, when he spotted an elderly man with a walker trying to shovel his snow-filled driveway.

“Tommy said ‘Mamma stop the car,'” Teresa Adams recalled. “I got scared and asked ‘what’s wrong?'”

He told her: “There’s an older man with a walker shovelling snow — I’ll help him out.”

Tommy approached the man and asked for the shovel. He immediately started to shovel the man’s driveway for him.

“He looked surprised,” Teresa told WTVR. “I was so proud, I started to cry.”

It took Tommy 15 minutes to clear the driveway.

Teresa took a photo of her son’s good deed. That photo was later shared on the WTVR CBS 6 News Facebook page, where it went viral.

“He said ‘God bless you, the world needs more people like you,'” Tommy recalled the man telling him.

Tommy told WTVR that he tries to help the elderly as “one day I may need help, too.”

Earlier this month, we shared the story of two Wisconsin park workers who have vowed to clear a path in the snow to an elderly man’s favourite bench for the rest of the winter.
