Young Ohio State Buckeyes fan names brain tumour ‘Michigan,’ beats cancer

Grant Reed, 12, is a huge Ohio State University fan. So much so that when he was diagnosed with a brain tumour two years ago, he named the cancerous mass after the Buckeyes' hated rival: Michigan.

"I think I know what I want to call it," Grant said at the time. "Michigan. Because Ohio State is always going to beat Michigan, and that’s what I’m going to do with this."

OSU football head coach Urban Meyer even visited the boy at the hospital in December.

Last Friday, Grant underwent his final chemotherapy session at Nationwide Children's Hospital. He beat Michigan.

"We've beaten Michigan for the short-term, but like any rival, there's a chance it can come back," Grant's father, Troy Reed, told NBC4.

Doctors believe Grant's prognosis for the future is a good one. In the short term, Grant hopes to recover from the medical complications that affected his speech and mobility.

"I want to recover. I want to talk faster, I guess. Walk faster," he told NBC4.

Grant's family donated two wagons to the hospital to be used by future patients.

"We did make the stipulation. It had to say 'Beat Michigan' on it," Troy said.

Even the Michigan Wolverines' head coach, Brady Hoke, was glad to see "Michigan" defeated this time:

"Grant's story is inspirational and shows how special this great rivalry is to so many people," Hoke told Sports Illustrated Kids. "Our team breaks each meeting with 'Beat Ohio,' and I think we can all agree this is one circumstance where it's acceptable to say 'Beat Michigan.'"

Grant's family hopes to attend an Ohio game this season, if Grant's health is good enough.
