Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder split after three years

It seems that eternity wasn’t in the cards for “The Vampire Diaries” stars Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder. Us Weekly is reporting that the two actors have ended their three-year-relationship.

A source reportedly told the magazine that Dobrev, 24, and Somerhalder, 34, have parted ways romantically but "will continue to work together and remain best friends, which is where the relationship started." Neither Dobrev’s nor Somerhalder’s camps have commented on the report, but this tweet from Somerhalder on Thursday doesn’t bode very well for them.

“A THOUGHT FOR TODAY: People change and forget to tell each other. -Lillian Hellman, playwright (1905-1984)” he wrote.

It’s sad, of course, but fans of the couple have been on split alert for a while now. Once there were proposal rumours, but now breakup speculation has been hovering over one of Hollywood’s favourite couples closely for a while now.

The biggest cause for concern was when the Toronto native actress went on an all-girls getaway to Miami last month, teamed with her close friends Julianne Hough and Riawna Capri. Hough (newly-single after her split from Ryan Seacrest) and Dobrev were believed to be celebrating life without romantic attachments.

Ever since arriving home from the trip, Dobrev has been walking red carpets solo. Last week, she attended the New York City premiere of “The Great Gatsby” all by herself, even though Somerhalder was seen earlier that day moving around New York City, also alone. This past weekend, Dobrev glammed up for the annual Met Gala, but did not have her co-star boyfriend by her side.

According to his Twitter feed, Somerhalder has an intense jet-setting schedule that is bringing him to China, Europe, the U.S. and Canada for acting projects and charity work. Perhaps this itinerary provided a good chance for Dobrev and Somerhalder to take a break.

Everything looked peachy for the couple at Easter, when they both visited Dobrev’s family in Toronto and posted a touching video message to a hospitalized teenage fan. But though Dobrev’s tweets from the weekend were cheerful, Somerhalder was surprisingly absent from all of them.

We have a lot of reasons to love IaNina, but sometimes it’s just not meant to be. Let’s hope this is just a bump in the road for these two (former?) lovers, and not the final nail in the coffin.
