Oprah in Canada: Host meets Tragically Hip, goes cowboy in Alberta

Despite one early complaint, Oprah appears to have a soft spot for Canada.

While the rest of Hollywood was focused on Barack Obama's inauguration, the 58-year-old talk show host was touring Edmonton, Calgary, and Vancouver last week in order to bring her Lifeclass series to a reported 43,000 Canadian fans.

Oprah had a bumpy start, hitting a frigid Edmonton first on Sunday, where she posted a photo of herself, her hands clenched, with a couple of airport personnel.

"-27 c when I landed," she tweeted.

To add insult to injury, her hotel didn't carry the Oprah Winfrey Network, despite the fact that its namesake had called earlier on to confirm that it did.

But things started looking up when she arrived in Calgary on Tuesday. Oprah wasted no time finding herself a white Stetson to get in the cowboy state of mind.

"Thank you CALGARY!" she tweeted enthusiastically, alongside a photo of her giving her new headgear two thumbs-up. She later added another portrait, in the snow, with the message "Thanks for your LOVE. Keep spreading' it!"

Two days later, Oprah was in Vancouver, enjoying the British Columbia city's cleansing power.

"Farewell Vancouver I loved being with you all at Rogers Arena," she tweeted on Friday. "Clean city. Great people. Was big Fun. Thank you! Thank you!"

And despite activists protesting the megastar's endorsement of a skin cream allegedly made from babies' circumcised foreskin, her fans welcomed her with open arms.

"It feels like everybody has their own personal life with Oprah," Vancouver's Kayla Rheosin-Miller told CBC. "Just to be in her presence is amazing. ... She's on such a human level with everybody."

Oprah was on a particularly human level with Canadian TV host George Stroumboulopoulos, who joined her on her three-city tour. In an interview with the Huffington Post, the "George Stroumboulopoulos Tonight" host revealed his favourite O moment, which occurred when they arrived at an Edmonton hotel.

"A couple of dudes said hello to her and I'm laughing inside because what no one's realizing is that Oprah is saying hello to the Tragically Hip," he said. "Staying in that same hotel that night, there was members of the San Jose Sharks, Oprah Winfrey and the Tragically Hip. I looked around and thought: right now, in Edmonton, 25 below, all that snow out there -- this place is a hot spot."

On Friday, Oprah flew out of Edmonton, posting a photo on Instagram of herself on a snow-covered tarmac along with her driver.

"Goodbye #Edmonton. Thanks for your Kindnesses," she wrote. "Invite me back when it's warmer."

We promise!
