Justin Bieber better hold tight to his green card, because over 50,000 Americans want to take it away from him.
In the wake of the 19-year-old Canadian pop star's Jan. 23 arrest on DUI and drag racing charges, a petition has been created on the White House's petitions website, asking the U.S. government to deport the Biebs and revoke his green card.
"We the people of the United States feel that we are being wrongly represented in the world of pop culture. We would like to see the dangerous, reckless, destructive, and drug abusing, Justin Bieber deported and his green card revoked," the petition reads. "He is not only threatening the safety of our people but he is also a terrible influence on our nations youth. We the people would like to remove Justin Bieber from our society."
The petition was created the day of Bieber's arrest by J.A. from Detroit, Michigan, and as of Tuesday morning, it has already amassed more than 60,000 signatures. The goal is 100,000, and, according to Radar Online, the White House will review a petition if it "gets enough support." The Twitter hashtag #DeportBieber also trended on Twitter last week, according to CNN.
But how likely is it that the "Hold Tight" singer will be sent packing back to Ontario, even if the U.S. government does look over the petition?
The National Post reported that Bieber is living in the U.S. on an O-1 visa and could be deported if "convicted of an aggravated felony, a crime with a prison sentence of one year or more, or a crime of 'moral turpitude.'"
According to Fox News, there is a maximum six-month sentence for a DUI conviction and the same penalty for a drag-racing offense. So, despite the fact that the petitioners find the teen musician morally offensive, it is unlikely he will actually meet the requirements of deportation just yet.
As for Bieber himself, he has faith on his side, as a recent tweet suggests.
