‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D’: What we know so far

omg! TV

We’ve know for some time that “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D,” ABC’s “Avengers” TV spin-off, would land on our screens this fall. But now we can officially mark a date in our calendars after the network announced the superhero-inspired series would premiere on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. ET.

Excitement levels are already high for the series, which brings Marvel’s comic book universe to the small screen, but what can we expect when “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” arrives in a few months time? Join us as we run down everything we know so far about the upcoming series.

Coulson lives!
Yes, despite being skewered by Loki’s spear during “The Avengers,” it turns out that Agent Coulson is alive and well. We’ll have to wait until the series starts to find out what happens to him, but it looks like Clark Gregg’s fan-favourite will be the principal player when “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” premieres in September.

He’s heading up a team
From what little we’ve seen so far, the new series will follow an Agent Coulson-fronted group as they try to track down and recruit new superheroes in a post-“Avengers” world. To that end, he’s joined by Brett Dalton’s combat specialist Grant Ward, Ming-Na Wen’s martial artist Melinda May, Elizabeth Henstridge’s brilliant chemist Jemma Simmons and Chloe Bennet’s genius hacker Skye -- it's a group that fans are already comparing to “Buffy the Vampire Slayer’s” Scooby gang.

There’s a new superhero in town
Judging from what we’ve seen on the teaser trailer, August J. Richards is set to become some sort of superhero in the series’ premiere. While it’s not known yet who he’ll play, the comic book community has been rampant with speculation, with the iron-skinned Luke Cage and relatively unknown Rage touted as his most likely identities.

The series will tie in with the films
In a recent interview, series co-creator (and Joss's brother) Jed Whedon revealed that the series will tie in with both existing and future films from the Marvel Universe. “We plan on trying to weave in between the films and try to make them more rewarding on both ends,” he said, suggesting that like the rest of the comic book publisher’s output, “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” will interweave with characters like Iron Man, Captain America and indeed The Avengers themselves.
