Space is the place in Civilization: Beyond Earth

Space is the place in Civilization: Beyond Earth

The long-running Civilization series puts you in the shoes (or boots, or sandals) of a famous historical leader and tasks you with guiding a culture to world domination.

But according to the newly announced Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth, there's a lot more out there than just measly old Earth. Developed by legendary developer Sid Meier and his team at Firaxis Games, this spacefaring take on Civ is due out in fall 2014.

“The Civ team was excited about the opportunity to continue the story of Civilization into the future, because it allows the team to break free of historical context,” said Civilization overlord Sid Meier. “We’ve always let our fans create the history of mankind, and Civilization: Beyond Earth will now let them create the future.”

If this sounds familiar, it’s because you wisely played 1999’s Alpha Centauri, a fantastic, Sid Meier-produced Civilization spin-off set in the stars. Civilization: Beyond Earth isn’t related, however.

“This game is not an Alpha Centauri sequel or prequel,” game designer David McDonough told IGN. “It’s its own idea, its own experience, based on the idea of the future of mankind on an alien world.”

It will still look a lot like the Civ you know and love, with a hex-based map, various factions, and plenty of war. But this is a new, standalone titles, not just a Civ 5 expansion.

That old linear tech tree from past games has been jettisoned in favor of a more contemporary web-like tree that should lend itself to greater variety. Overarching ‘Affinities’, such as ‘Supremacy’, or ‘Harmony’, will guide your culture’s general overall evolution. Instead of just picking a side and starting with the same bonuses each time, your starting conditions can fluctuate significantly based on a number of factors. You’ll even go on quests to unlock the mysteries of the planet, and a new orbital layer will let you launch game-changing satellites.

So yeah, it’s Civ in space. Your free time should be terrified. Here's hoping we hear much more about this upcoming life-wrecker at the E3 conference in June.
