Is David Suzuki our most admired Canadian?

Don't tell Ezra Levant, but according to a new poll, green advocate David Suzuki is our most-admired Canadian.

The survey, conducted by Angus Reid, asked 1,000 Canadians to rank how much they admired a list of high-profile Canadians. Suzuki topped the list with a 57% admiration rate, followed by wheelchair athlete Rick Hansen at 50% and CBC newscaster Peter Mansbridge at 48%.

Suzuki has been long been the target of Levant, the outspoken Sun News commentator and host of The Source. Levant's attacks have been particularly pointed recently, after being snubbed by the environmental spokesman during a recent visit to Toronto.

"Most of us know one of the Suzukis," Levant wrote in a recent column. "Let’s call him Saint Suzuki. That’s the Suzuki whose TV show on the CBC constantly lectures us about our lifestyle. He says we need to consume less, buy less and use less fossil fuels. But then there’s another Suzuki. Let’s call him Secret Suzuki, because he’s far less well-known. Secret Suzuki is the one who lives on Vancouver’s elite Point Grey Road, on a double lot, overlooking English Bay, right above the exclusive Kitsilano Yacht Club."

Clearly Canadians don't share that level of skepticism, and they clearly are aware of Suzuki's brand. Of the people surveyed in the poll, only 7% of respondents didn't know who Suzuki was, compared to a pretty startling 28% for Hansen and 22% for Mansbridge.

Interestingly, who are the three least admirable Canadians? Former Olympic organizer John Furlong (6% admiration), former newspaper baron Conrad Black (5%) and Senator Mike Duffy (4%).
