It appears Justin Trudeau will have little opposition in becoming the next leader of the federal Liberal party.

Marc Garneau and David Bertschi have dropped out of the race, and none of the six remaining candidates look poised to trump Trudeau-mania. So we wanted to ask you: Do you think Trudeau would make a good leader?

Here's what you said:

Thomas Bink: I probably haven’t seen enough of Trudeau to make a call on this. He seems like a nice enough guy, but it’s clear his modus operandi is style over substance, which is worrisome. He also doesn’t have a ton of experience on the big stage, and at this point a seasoned leader like Stephen Harper could tear him to shreds. I know he’ll surround himself with some of the best advisors in the country, but there’s no substitute for experience. I think the Liberal Party will get some bounce out of his charisma and popularity, but when it gets down to hashing out the issues, Trudeau’s just not ready yet.

Andy Radia: I agree with in the sense that he hasn't shown us much but I wouldn't mistake that for lack of substance. Trudeau is running a typical front-runner campaign which means 'don't stir the pot.' When he has spoken about issues, however, I think he's presented himself as a thoughtful and intelligent individual. He did so with his op-ed about the CNOOC-Nexen takeover and has done so on issues about proportional representation and the legalization of marijuana. Moreover, I think he's smart enough to surround himself with the quality people. If you look at his campaign team, you'll see he's attracted highly-regarded campaigners, communications staff and policy wonks.

Bink: I think having quality people behind you can only go so far. At some point you have to step into the spotlight alone, which is why debates are so good at showing candidates in a more candid, reactive setting. At this point, Trudeau would be going up against a buzz saw if he debated with Harper. His policy wonks have a lot of work to do to get him ready for that.

Radia: People used to say the same things about Chretien — that he wasn't 'intellectual' or polished enough to be leader or prime minister. He did okay, he won three majorities. I remember an article about Stephen Harper, about him not having any cabinet experience. He's won three straight terms. I'm sure there's going to be some bumps in the road early on, but Trudeau will have two years until the next election as an opposition party leader to develop his skills and show Canadians that he's got the substance. I think he'll be just fine.

Bink: He’ll make things interesting, that’s for sure. I think it will be a real test to see how far charisma can take someone. I suppose it’s worked in the past for Bill Clinton, Ronald Reagan and Justin’s dad – they were able to charm voters. But we’ve also seen it backfire – like with Stockwell Day or Sarah Palin. It will be interesting to see where Trudeau will land if he isn’t able to add some more steak to the sizzle. He’s just got to avoid major gaffes, and you’re right, hiding behind the hype right now is working.
