New Huawei MediaPad tablet to be the first to run Android

The latest tablet to crack the burgeoning market will be the first to dawn one of today's most popular mobile operating systems.

Huawei Technologies Co. recently launched the seven-inch MediaPad tablet, the first of its kind to run on Android.

Weighing less than a pound, the MediaPad features a dual-core 1.2-gigahertz processor, front and rear-facing cameras and the new Honeycomb version of the Android OS, says The Wall Street Journal.

The 10.5mm body is thicker than that of the iPad 2 (8.8mm), yet the 217 pixels-per-inch IPS touchscreen, 8GB of storage and HDMI output make the MediaPad a viable alternative.

Huawei is looking at Asia Pacific, the Americas and certain European locations as its key markets, says Victor Xu, chief marketing officer in the Wall Street Journal story. Xu declined to reveal the total cost for the new product.

Known as a telecommunications vendor, Huawei is hoping for a successful expansion into the mobile market with products including tablets, smartphones and other cellular devices.
