‘Inkling’ pen lets artists sketch anywhere, then convert to digital

For any artist who has ever been frustrated trying to scan drawings into a computer or doodle using a tablet and stylus, your prayers have been answered.

Wacom has announced the Inkling, a digital sketch pen that lets the artist draw on any piece of paper and upload it to a computer. Check out the pen in action:

A press release from Wacom states the Inkling system uses a special pen and wireless receiver to record the image as it's drawn on the page. The receiver can attach to sketchpads and notebooks. This gives artists a lot more freedom than was possible with previous products like the Livescribe, which required a special notepad.

Files can be transferred to Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, as well as Autodesk Sketchbook Pro, and saved in JPG, BMP, TIFF, PNG, SVG and PDF formats.

The pen will cost $199 US, which seems reasonable when compared to the cost of a tablet. Artists and doodlers alike can pick up the pen from Amazon and the Wacom store near the end of September.
