Microsoft Surface doesn’t interest Americans, but how do Canadians feel?

The new Microsoft Surface tablet was unveiled to great fanfare on June 18, situating itself as a possible contender against the iPad.

But a recent unscientific poll by a couponing site suggests that Americans aren't going to be lining up around the block to get their hands on one.

The U.S. website CouponCodes4U asked just over 1,500 of its visitors age 21-35 whether they owned a tablet and if they would purchase the new Microsoft Surface. The survey, MacTech reports, found that 58 per cent of respondents owned a tablet, but only 41 per cent of them would be willing to switch to the Microsoft Surface when it is released. Of those who didn't own a tablet, only 22 per cent of respondents said they would be interested in purchasing a Microsoft Surface tablet.

While the purchasing habits of Canadians are generally quite similar to our neighbours down south, there are some major differences, too, and many of those are evident when it comes to technology. A study of Anglophone Canadians in March and April found that 21 per cent owned a tablet, and 62 per cent of those owned an iPad.

A similar study in the U.S. (PDF link) came out earlier this week, which showed 31 per cent of Americans own tablet devices. The iPad is quickly losing market share to Android devices, however, with only 52 per cent of tablet users owning an iPad.

Where Canadians and Americans differ the most, though, is on the Blackberry Playbook: 20 per cent of Canadian tablet owners have the RIM device, while only eight per cent of tablet-using Americans are Playbook owners.

The Right Click has decided to conduct our own unofficial poll to see if we're in step with what Americans think about the newest big player in the tablet market. Vote in the poll on the right-hand side of the page and help us figure out if Canadians are more interested in the new Microsoft Surface than Americans.
