‘American Pie’ star Natasha Lyonne re-emerges 13 years later
This one time, at a New York movie screening, Natasha Lyonne showed up!
Thirteen years after breaking out as the wisecracking Jessica in "American Pie," Lyonne attended the premiere of Netflix movie "Lilyhammer" in New York on Wednesday.
The 32-year-old New Yorker, who has been out of the spotlight for the past decade, has slowly been re-emerging on red carpets in the past few months for Broadway shows and screenings. In September, she was photographed filming "Imogene," Kristen Wiig's much-anticipated follow-up to "Bridesmaids." She also recently appeared on the Zooey Deschanel sitcom "New Girl" and is set to reprise her role as Jessica in "American Reunion" later this year.
But where has the girl been for the last 10 years? Lyonne's story is about as salacious as the punch line to the infamous "American Pie" band-camp story.
Two years after she hit it big with "American Pie" at age 20, her mug shot was all over the press following her arrest for driving under the influence. She reportedly said to the police at the time, "I'm a movie star. Can I talk to my entertainment lawyer?" She later pleaded guilty and was on probation for a year.
But that wasn't the end of her troubles. In 2004, the "Blade: Trinity" star made news again after reportedly entering a neighbour's apartment and threatening to sexually molest the woman's dog (we wish we were kidding). Another report claimed she was hooked on heroin at the time (which would explain the bizarre threat).
A year later, Lyonne was evicted by actor (and landlord) Michael Rappaport after he received a barrage of complaints about her odd living habits. He wrote a piece for Jane magazine on the terrible state in which she left her apartment. Later that year, Lyonne was reported missing, only to be found in intensive care undergoing methadone treatment at a New York hospital. She allegedly had contracted hepatitis C, was dealing with a heart infection and a collapsed lung, and was covered in track marks.
But it seems Lyonne took that hospital visit as a wake-up call. For the past seven years, she has been trying to claw her way back into the spotlight in various Broadway plays, such as "Love, Loss, and What I Wore" and "Tiger Be Still." And, if recent reports are to be believed, she is doing well.
"I took it about as far as I could," she told the New York Times in 2008. "And I didn't die, so I decided to live, basically."
Good choice.
