How did Miley Cyrus’s performance rank among the most outrageous VMA moments?

Miley Cyrus twerked her way into the headlines on Sunday night after a controversial performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards in Brooklyn. The former Disney star stripped down to her underwear, dirty-danced with her singing partner Robin Thicke, and sexed it up with a bunch of stuffed animals during her time on stage.

Twitter almost exploded at the sight of it, and the Smith family was left stunned as Cyrus’s antics courted the kind of controversy she was no doubt hoping for. But while her performance was easily the most shocking of the night, how does it stack up against some of the other outrageous moments in VMA history?

Kanye West interrupts Taylor Swift’s acceptance speech – 2009

Taylor Swift scooped the Best Female Video award in 2009, making history as the first country singer to win the award. Not everyone seemed pleased for Swift, however, as Kanye West took to the stage during the singer’s acceptance speech to let her know exactly what he thought. The end result was nothing short of outrageous, and while it’s been four years since West’s impromptu appearance, his “Imma let you finish” rant still lives on as one of the memorable moments in VMA history.

Madonna and Britney kiss – 2003

The world stopped for a moment in 2003 when the Queen of Pop locked lips with Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera during her live performance. It was as significant as it was shocking (at the time, anyway), as Madge seemingly passed the baton (and some saliva) to a new generation of shocking stars.

Rose McGowan bares it all – 1998

Rose McGowan didn’t leave much to the imagination in 1993 when the then-girlfriend of Marilyn Manson stunned the red carpet with a fabric-saving frock that left very little to the imagination of shocked onlookers.

Gaga’s carcass couture – 2010

McGowan isn’t the only person whose outrageous ensemble shocked the VMAs. In 2010, Lady Gag left jaws agape with her controversial dress made entirely of meat. The singer dominated the evening by winning eight awards and monopolized the headlines, too, thanks to her carcass couture, a political statement so shocking that the dress now resides in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Diana Ross Jiggles Lil' Kim – 1999

Baring flesh seems to be a rite of passage for popsters attending the VMAs. In 1999, it was up to Lil’ Kim, who stole the headlines with a breast-baring dress. However, the Grammy-winning MC was eventually upstaged by Diva queen Diana Ross, who stole second base in front of an audience of millions by cheekily jiggling Lil Kim’s exposed boob while presenting the award for best hip-hop video in 1999.

Rage Against the Machine rage on stage – 2000

Rage Against the Machine bassist Tim Commerford was understandably annoyed after losing out to Limp Bizkit for best rock video in 2000. In fact, he was so frustrated he decided to scale the set in protest and was eventually arrested after upstaging Fred Durst during his acceptance speech.
