Believe it or not, performing "Run This Town" on stage with Christ Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow wasn't enough to celebrate the beginning of 2013 for rapper Jay-Z.
In fact, the Coldplay/Jay-Z concert at Brooklyn's Barclays Center was more of a sideshow for the real action happening at the bar. And as a result, Jay-Z is starting off the new year almost $400,000 Cdn poorer.
The 43-year-old rapper and music mogul not only picked up the entire tab of the open bar, but lined a wall of the VIP area with bottles of Armand de Brignac Brut Gold champagne (about $475 Cdn each). And to cap it all off, he reportedly brought in a 30-litre bottle of the expensive bubbly measuring about 1.2 metres tall and 100 kg, carried by two men.
Though he still sometimes takes the subway, we can't be too surprised at Jigga's lavish spending. He does, after all, make it a bit of a tradition. In 2010, he and Martin joined forces in a party that featured special guests Beyonce, Kanye West, John Mayer, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna, and 50 Cent at the Cosmopolitan resort in Las Vegas. Again, Armand de Brigna was the drink of choice.
Other celebrities aren't afraid to go all-out for New Year's Eve. Take Nicki Minaj, for example, who brought in 2011 with an "All Pink Everything" theme at Miami Beach's Mansion nightclub, featuring Harajuku Barbie dancers, an open bar until midnight, a performance by Minaj herself, and a $200 cover fee. This year, she toned down the colour palette, moved the party to Vegas, and cut the cost to $110 - but of course, her Barbie dancers were a highlight.
A pregnancy didn't stop Kim Kardashian and Kanye West from beginning 2013 at a club this year, since Kardashian has hosted parties the last few years with ticket prices over $100 each. This year, a table reservation at her party at Vegas's Mirage Hotel and Casino would set attendees back $3,000.
Of course, she wasn't the one footing the bill for her guests. In fact, she apparently made $300,000 for the appearance. Perhaps Jay-Z really is a jolly good fellow that nobody can deny.
