Blue Jays fever hits Calgary

Blue Jays fever has been spreading across the country, and Calgarians aren't immune.

Dubbed "Canada's Team," the Jays are fighting their way to a playoff spot, standing at the top of the American League. The team hasn't made it to the post-season in over two decades.

"It's incredible. It's what Jays fans have been waiting for since '93," said Paul Christie, a diehard fan from Ontario, and just one of a handful of Jays enthusiasts who gathered at the Pig and Duke Pub for Wednesday's game.

Jo Lowden owns the Pig and Duke and welcomes the recent uptick in baseball-related business.

"There was a game about two weeks ago where the Yankees were playing and everyone was cheering against the Yankees. So you could tell they were really paying attention," he said.

The pub crowd incuded the aforementioned fan from Ontario, but also a transplant from Saskatchewan and more than a few locals.

Jeremy Klaszus, a local freelance writer and Jays fan, says the hype is all about the calibre of play.

"It's often said baseball is boring. Well anybody who's watched the Blue Jays over the past two weeks or month knows that baseball is not boring. There's been all kinds of dramatic moments. I think that pulls people in," he said.
