Blumarine RTW Spring 2023

At the intersection of the current buzz for the upcoming live-action movie “The Little Mermaid” and the timeless hype around Britney Spears’ iconic denim look at the 2001 American Music Awards stands the collection Nicola Brognano designed for spring.

Needless to say, this continued to build on the designer’s crystallized Y2K fashion narrative, but this time the lineup parading in between sand dunes drenched with a rawer attitude.

After exploring his muse’s girly ways and her more audacious and mature side, Brognano dived into a gothic, rave-y vibe by betting big on denim and elongated silhouettes, as well as welcoming crosses and studs in Blumarine’s iconography next to the signature butterfly and rose symbols.

Bleached treatments added a sandy and lived-in feel to denim strapless long dresses, bustiers and bell bottom pants, whose flair was amplified by chiffon ruffles fluctuating at every stomp. Cargo pants reprised the same ample silhouette, making for an urban transposition of a mermaid’s tail.

The sensual aspect of Brognano’s aesthetic was introduced via jersey frocks ruched and draped to hug the body and liquid gowns with plunging necklines to further reveal it. Strips of fabric dangled from everywhere, extending the silhouette.

A tad repetitive, the lineup also included beaded tops and mini frocks in coral red as well as two tailored looks that showed there’s an unexplored world in the depths of Brognano’s fashion that might be worth uncovering.
