BMO Vancouver Marathon marriage proposal leads to tears and applause
A BMO Vancouver Marathon runner offered his hand in marriage at the finish line on Sunday morning.
And she said yes.
A small crowd gathered to watch him get on one knee and put a ring on the finger of his betrothed, another runner.
The woman on the receiving end of the proposal wept as the ring went on and when the sweaty couple hugged, the crowd applauded.
Names were not provided.
Marathon events draw thousands to Vancouver
Nearly 18,000 people participated in this year's marathon events, which included a full and a half marathon, an eight kilometer race, a kids' run and a run relay.
The winner of the men's marathon was Luka Chelima of Kenya, who ran the 42.5 kilometers in just over two hours 18 minutes.
Canadian Kip Kangogo placed third with a time of 2:19:31.
Markham, Ont.'s Lioudmila Kortchaguina won the women's event with a time of 2:37:37. Vancouver's Ellie Greenwood finished third in 2:47:23.
A road block for the event remains in place near the finish line at west Hastings Street and Burrard Street. A street fair where runners and families can gather is set up there until 7 p.m. PT.
