Boat owner 'very lucky' to escape after vessel catches fire on land

A Sydney, N.S., man had a narrow escape today when his boat caught fire in a driveway and set the attached building ablaze.

Paul Ferguson, platoon chief with Cape Breton Regional Fire Service, said crews were called at 3:45 p.m. to the three-unit apartment building on Brookland Street for a reported boat fire.

"The fire intensifies because of the resins and the fibreglass [in the boat]," he said.

The fire spread to the building, causing serious damage, but no one was hurt.

"He was very lucky, judging by the destruction on the scene here," Ferguson said of the boat owner.

The man seems to have been working on the boat when the fire started, but Ferguson said they don't yet know what started it.

Cape Breton firefighters put out another apartment-building fire on the weekend. A four-unit building in Louisbourg caught fire Saturday. No one was hurt, but police are investigating it as a suspicious fire.
