Boaters see ‘blows from shore’ and find themselves surrounded by ‘incredible animals’
A group of boaters was driving to a harbor in Norway when they spotted several “blows from shore.”
As they left the harbor, they were immediately stunned by “whales everywhere,” Orca Channel, a group that shoots documentaries on the winter whale season in Norway, said in a Nov. 3 Facebook post.
“The reality blew our minds,” the post said. “Orcas, where the eye could see, groups of humpback whales, and even fin whales later during the day.”
The creatures spent much of the day feeding, Orca Channel said in its post.
“We spent the whole day in front of Skjervøy (some orcas were right by the harbor entrance) watching these incredible animals,” the post said.
Photos show the humongous animals grouped together in the water.
Some of the whales were exhibiting interesting behavior, too, the group said in its post.
“It is still incredible to witness how the fin whale’s behavior has evolved over the past years,” Orca Channel wrote. “3-4 years ago, they were much more shy. These days, they always appear in the middle of the action.”
The north of Norway is a “rare place” that hosts the “biggest congregation of cetaceans” — the order of marine mammals that includes whales — because it is home to a type of herring that comes close to the shore, according to Orca Channel.
