Bob Brooks resigns from Yellowknife city council after 24 years

Yellowknife city councillor Bob Brooks resigned yesterday after 24 years in office, citing a new position with the territorial government as the reason for his resignation.

Brooks, who moved to Yellowknife in 1980 and was first elected in 1991, says that his resignation comes after taking a position as the director of community governance with the territorial government's Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.

He says that he's grateful for his experience as a city councillor, and that he's counting on his experience to help him in his new position.

"Twenty years of experience I've had on Yellowknife city council," said Brooks, "and the 14 years experience I've had with Industry, Tourism, and Investment [Brooks' previous employers], and I figured marrying the two would be the perfect opportunity."

Brooks, who spent seven terms in office, is the longest serving councillor in Yellowknife's history.

The City of Yellowknife's municipal election, where a new mayor and city council will be elected, is slated for October 19 of this year.
