Body found near Gambier Island, other boater still missing

Sexual assault Good Samaritan sought by Surrey police

Search and rescue teams are looking for a missing person following the death of a boater near Gambier Island, B.C.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria says an empty 20-foot pleasure craft was spotted in Howe Sound near the island on Saturday night around 9 p.m. PT.

No one was aboard the vessel, even though the keys were still in the ignition and the motor was in the water.

Lt. Paul Trenholm said search crews found the body of one person floating just off the east shore of Gambier Island around two hours later.

He said another boater is still missing.

"We've begun a search throughout the entire east side of Howe sound," said Trenholm. "The high probability zone, of course, began where we found the boat adrift."

Trenholm said the search is being considered a rescue operation, and if anyone has any information about the missing man they should contact RCMP.
