Man to face charges after decomposing body found in vacant downtown lot

Montreal police say a 60-year-old man will appear in court Wednesday to face a criminal charge in connection with the discovery of a decomposing body in a vacant lot near La Fontaine Park.

Police say that after meeting overnight with investigators, the man will be charged with interfering with a dead body.

The body was discovered Monday evening, but police say it was so badly decomposed that it was likely in the lot for days.

A passerby called 911 around 2:15 p.m. Monday to report a body lying in the lot on Beaudry Street, just below Sherbrooke Street East.

Police say the victim is a 37-year-old woman.

Police are calling it a "suspicious death," noting that "elements discovered on the scene" lead them to believe the death might not have been due to natural causes.

An autopsy will be performed.
