Body found washed up on Maine beach IDed as Saint Andrews man

A body found washed up on a beach in Robbinston, Maine, has been identified as a missing 64-year-old man from Saint Andrews, say Maine State Police.

"As there is no indication that [he] died in the State of Maine, the RCMP will now become the lead agency in the investigation and further questions should be directed to them," the state police said in a news release Thursday.

The Saint Andrews RCMP is investigating the "sudden death" and trying to determine how the man ended up in the water, said Cpl. Jullie Rogers-Marsh, spokesperson for the New Brunswick RCMP.

His death is not considered suspicious at this point, she said, but RCMP are still waiting for the autopsy results and the investigation continues.

The man was last seen on the afternoon of July 2 and reported missing to the RCMP on July 3, said Rogers-Marsh.

"Efforts were made to try and locate the man and several leads were being followed." A news release about him being missing wasn't issued as police were still following up on leads, she said.

On July 5, "a concerned party" called the Bangor Regional Communication Center after making the grisly discovery on the beach in Robbinston. Cpl. Micah Perkins responded to the scene shortly before 2:30 p.m.

Because there were no known missing persons from the area, state troopers contacted Canadian authorities about the investigation, and continue to work with RCMP, according to the release.

Robbinston is located west of Saint Andrews, almost directly across the St. Croix River.

The autopsy is being conducted by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) to determine the cause and manner of death.

Troopers were assisted on scene by the Maine Marine Patrol, Washington County Sheriff's Office, Robbinston Fire Department , Calais Fire EMS, and the U.S. Border Patrol.
