A Wisconsin man convicted of sexual assault and kidnapping who'd been a fugitive for nearly three decades has been caught — allegedly after he gave officers the name of a dead man.

Bodycam footage shared by KCCI and WISN shows the arrest of George Hartleroad, 71. In the footage, which was reportedly released recently, Hartleroad is seen initially identifying himself to officers as Gregory Stallin, a man police say is deceased.

Subsequently, the officer is heard telling Hartleroad, "Alright brother, time to be honest with me, OK? So the info you give me comes back to a dead guy. Gregory Stallins is dead."

Hartleroad insists that he's Stallins, and that he's alive, but the officer keeps questioning him, the video shows.

"You're Gregory, you're just not dead?" the officer asks.

"I'm not dead," Hartleroad responds.

But after another officer arrives, Hartleroad gives his actual name. After that, the video shows police looking him up in a database — and learning that he's been on the run since 1995.

According to unspecified court records cited by WISN and 15 WMTV Hartleroad was convicted decades ago of false imprisonment, possession of a short-barreled rifle and endangering safety by conduct regardless of life.

CNN and KCCI further reported, that authorities say Hartleroad was convicted of rape as well.

The court records show he was convicted after he forced a woman into sexual activity at knifepoint. He also put her in his trunk and tied her to a tree, per WISN.

He escaped from a halfway house in Madison, Wis., in 1995, WMTV News and KCCI reported, citing Department of Corrections records.
