Boris Johnson will move to scrap discount deals for junk food, according to reports, following his Damascene conversion to the belief that tough steps are needed to resolve the nation’s obesity crisis – thought to be a factor in the severity of the UK’s coronavirus outbreak.
His government was accused of apologising to Saudi Arabia after a number of the kingdom’s citizens were sanctioned by the UK in a Magnitsky Act-style move. Critics said Ben Wallace’s call to Riyadh to reaffirm Britain’s support for the regime sent the wrong message.
Meanwhile, MPs have warned that parts of England may run out of water in the next 20 years if the government does not act. The Commons Public Accounts Committee said there had been “no progress” in reducing leakage over the past two decades, “very little” has been achieved in reducing demand and a “far too ponderous” approach has been taken to improving water infrastructure.
