Boy injured, sled dogs put down

A four-year-old boy from northern Saskatchewan is in hospital and a team of sled dogs has been put down following a dog-biting incident near a northern Sakatchewan village.

It happened Saturday near Southend, which is about 600 kilometres northeast of Saskatoon.

According to the RCMP, the boy had been with a caregiver, helping to feed a group of sled dogs.

At one point, the boy was told to stay in a vehicle, but the boy came out and was attacked by a dog that was off its leash.

The boy was initially taken to a medical clinic at Peter Ballantyne Cree Nation and then tranferred to a Saskatoon hospital via air ambulance.

His injuries were serious but were not life-threatening, the RCMP said. His treatment in hospital continues.

Following the attack, the dog was hit by a vehicle and killed.

The remaining 13 musher dogs were later put down by the owner, the RCMP said.

The incident is "not suspicious in nature" and further investigation by police is not expected, the RCMP said.
