If you, like us, binge-watched the whole of Prime Video's The Boys season two in approximately four days – or just need some big superhero energy in your life to break up the true-crime documentaries and romcoms – then we’ve got good news: The Boys are back in town! …Well, they’re on their way.

Yep, Amazon confirmed back in July that it's renewed the superhero satire for a third series despite season two being released three months later (on 4th September), and it started filming in February 2021.

Here’s everything we know about the season three (including some spoilers for season two – just in case you somehow managed to not watch it back-to-back)…

Who’s in The Boys season 3?

Most of the season-two characters are all expected to return (including Karl Urban, Gossip Girl’s Chace Crawford and The Hunger Games’ Jack Quaid), and there’s a new hero in town – played by Supernatural's Jensen Ackles. He’ll be taking on the role of Soldier Boy, the original super-celebrity in the comics The Boys is based on.

Jensen shared the news on Instagram with the caption, “I keep wondering what I'll do....when @cw_supernatural finally ends this year. Then it hit me.” But, as showrunner Eric Kripke explained to Variety, “Anyone expecting Jensen to show up and be a good guy will be disappointed. I’ll say that!” Exciting.

However, it looks like one major character probably won't be returning - Stormfront played by Aya Cash. So it's not exactly like Stormfront was definitely coming back given the fate of her character in the finale, but ~then again~ she is supposed to be immortal.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Aya revealed her contract was only supposed to last a year. "I want to know if she'll be back, too," she said. "I'm not there now. I'm on a new Fox show now called This Country. My contract for The Boys was only for a year, so who knows? Maybe they can CGI my face in."

What’s going to happen in The Boys season 3?

As fans of the show will know, the season two finale is a real game-changer (The Boys are no longer in hiding, but Homelander is still alive and well in Vought Tower). According to a tweet from Kripke, the first episode of season three is titled Payback, which could apply to almost any of the characters after the events of season two’s finale. Or perhaps it's a reference to the superhero group that started it all, which Soldier Boy belonged to…?

Is there a trailer for The Boys season 3?

Not yet, and probably not for a while. Speaking at Comic Con At Home back in July 2020, Kripke said Amazon greenlit season three of The Boys “in a bold and historic push to expand their ‘weirdo’ demographic” (our favourite demographic). So we're hoping that, when it does arrive, the trailer’s going to be grittier than ever.

When can I watch The Boys season 3?

Filming began in February 2021. Season one arrived in July 2019, and season two dropped on 4th September 2020, so we think a release date towards the end of 2021 looks likely. The countdown is on, friends!
