The Boys spoilers follow for season 2 episode 5 'We Gotta Go Now'.

The Boys isn't exactly your typical superhero show and it's always full of surprises, none more so than the latest big twist in the fifth episode of the show's second season, 'We Gotta Go Now', which sees enemy superheroes Homelander (Antony Starr) and Stormfront (Aya Cash) have sex.

Fans will have been surprised to see the moment unfold, not least because Homelander has not been hiding his hatred for the newest member of the Seven after she questioned his power, disobeyed his orders and appeared to be usurping his position as the group's leader.

Their intimate scene isn't particularly loving as it's also filled with moments of the duo throwing and attacking each other in a power struggle, but Starr explained in an interview with Collider that the pair are drawn to each other because they are both so powerful that they can push each other to the limit – which is something they don't have with anyone else.

"You've gotta look at where it's coming from within Homelander," he said. "He's the neediest, emotionally weakest character on the show, and he killed his right-hand woman/handler/mommy lover (Madelyn) Stillwell.

"As much as he believed that was the right thing to do, he's a needy little boy and he finds someone that adores him. Even though it doesn't start off like that, by the time they get to that, he finds not only a replacement but an equal – someone that he can laser but doesn't break."

The actor added that Homelander has been "ostracised and disconnected" from everybody else for his entire life and has "based his whole identity in the character of Homelander", which has left him desperate to connect with someone on the same level as himself.

Starr also revealed that he and co-star Cash had found some elements of the scene "really difficult" to film and that quite a few things didn't go to plan, with an incident with a prop causing a bit of trouble.

"Aya and I were harnessed, and making out in harnesses, which is actually really difficult," he said. "We were meant to be having sex in the middle of the air when a mirror ball drops. It was a very tricky shot to get. We had to be slowly spinning.

"Everything that could go wrong, went wrong, and we just started giggling and wasted one of the chandeliers. We couldn't stop laughing and Eric (Kripke, the show's developer) was a little grumpy because we wasted a very significant and expensive prop.

"It was that thing where it's so ridiculous that all we could do is sit in our very uncomfortable harnesses, 10 feet off the ground, and giggle."
