While COVID-19 has greatly affected post-secondary students and institutions across Canada, new research shows the pandemic has resulted in only a small decline in international student enrolments nationwide. This is especially the case for students applying for study permits to the Yukon, with international student enrolment at Yukon University — the first university in Canada's North — now returning to pre-pandemic levels. The study was funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Cou

OTTAWA — Children turning up for their COVID-19 vaccine in Quebec last Friday were surprised to find not just the promise of a sticker at the end of the ordeal, but a waggy-tailed dog eager to be petted and potentially calm their fears over getting the shots. At least three provinces have been recruiting therapy dogs to help reassure children and adults nervous about getting needles at vaccination clinics for months. Now the specially-trained canines are being enlisted to help with the rollout o
BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — Memphis Depay and Philippe Coutinho scored late at Villarreal as Barcelona won 3-1 and ended its winless streak in the Spanish league on Saturday. PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) — The overcast, drizzly skies match the somber mood at the Tshwane University of Technology, a hot spot in South Africa’s latest surge of COVID-19 cases, apparently driven by the new omicron variant that is leading countries around the world to impose new restrictions. THE HAGUE, Netherlands (AP) — Cases of the omicron variant of the coronavirus popped up in countries on opposite sides of the world Sunday and many governments rushed to close their borders even as scientists cautioned that it's not clear if the new variant is more alarming than other versions of the virus. Several countries around the world have implemented travel restrictions in efforts to prevent the omicron coronavirus variant from taking hold.
The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Sunday that it is not yet clear if the new Omicron coronavirus variant is more transmissible compared to other SARS-CoV-2 variants or if it causes more severe disease. "Preliminary data suggests that there are increasing rates of hospitalization in South Africa, but this may be due to increasing overall numbers of people becoming infected, rather than a result of specific infection with Omicron," it said. However, in a statement, the agency reiterated that preliminary evidence suggests there may be a higher risk of reinfection from the variant.
