Brandon, Man. waitress saves choking customers with the Heimlich manoeuver

It is terrifying when you are out for a meal and food gets lodged in your throat. If Tarriyanna Saunders happens to be your waitress you can feel comfortable chewing away.

The Brandon, Man. waitress has built a reputation for her life-saving service after doing the Heimlich manoeuvre.

Recently the 21-year-old, who works at Bistro 40, was taking an order when she got called to the restaurant's front desk.

"There was a senior that was choking at the front there," Saunders said, adding the restaurant staff knew she had helped choking customers before.

"So I went over and seen if he was choking and needed help and he did. So I ended up performing the Heimlich manoeuvre on him.

The customer was grateful and gave Saunders a tip.

"It actually made me feel really good that I was actually able to help somebody," she said.

Saunders learned CPR and first aid in high school in Alberta. It's certainly come in handy, she said not long ago she also helped a woman choking on a piece of food at the restaurant.

She added its important knowledge to have in the restaurant industry.

"I think it is important to know because everybody is constantly eating food or around food and if they do choke it would be great to know," she said.

It will also help Saunders as she pursues a career as a health care aid.
