The cross pollination of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul continues, with a fan favourite from the former turning up in the latest episode of the latter.

In the episode Something Beautiful, which is now streaming on Netflix, we once again encountered mild-mannered chemist Gale Boetticher.

Played by David Costabile, the ultra-proficient meth cook features in a scene with Giancarlo Esposito’s drug king pin Gus Fring, discussing ‘benzodiazepine compounds’ and contaminated, low quality drug samples.

He also performs a brief rendition of The Elements, the classic spoof of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Major-General song by humorist Tom Lehrer.

He was always an incurable nerd, then.

Gale first appeared in Breaking Bad in season three, wooing Bryan Cranston’s Walter White with his peerless lab skills.

However things don’t end terribly well for him.

It will no doubt excite fans further to the possibility of Walter, and even his sidekick Jesse Pinkman (played by Aaron Paul), turning up in some capacity or other.

Creator Vince Gilligan told Entertainment Weekly recently: “I desperately want to see both of them on Better Call Saul. Peter [Gould] wants it, the writers do, the actors do.

“It wouldn’t feel as satisfying if it was just a cameo or an Alfred Hitchcock walkthrough.

“I think we’ve waited long enough. We damn well better have a good reason for them to show up. I just hope we figure it out because I’ve got to hear, ‘Yeah, bitch!’ one more time.”
