Brief, powerful storm downs trees, power lines in Winnipeg

City crews are working to clean up the damage left behind by a thunderstorm that rolled through Winnipeg Saturday afternoon.

The storm didn’t last long, but high winds and rain toppled trees and briefly left about 300 homes without power.

By Sunday morning, the city had taken 102 calls about fallen trees and branches.

Wind gusts in the city reached 80 kilometres per hour, and outside of the city in Arborg, winds reached 97 km/h.

Traffic lights were knocked out, branches fell from trees and a tree fell on a home on Regent Avenue East in Transcona.

No one was injured in the Regent incident, and the man who owns the house told CBC the tree didn’t damage the inside of his home.

He won’t be allowed back onto the property until crews clear the tree, which is expected to happen Sunday afternoon.

The storm forced thousands under tents at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, and The Players Cup Golf Tournament had to be shut down while the storm passed through.
