The latest addition to the list of things I never knew I needed is the brilliant Hoan Bagel Guillotine Slicer. It may not be what I usually write about, but hear me out. Whether you pronounce it bagel or bagel (funny how you read those differently), there’s something about cutting into these circular buns that really irks my nerves for two reasons. First, between the stale bread and my stale knives, I can never slice a bagel in half. Second, because of their natural wheel shape, there’s just something about cutting into them that feels awkward and a little bit unsafe. And don’t even get me started on buying pre-sliced bagels!

Count me out as the oddball, but there are more than 3,200 reviewers who seem to love it and the convenience it offers.

“This bagel cutter is great, wish I had ordered it years ago. Works great with fresh/semi-frozen but not soft bagels. I bought this for my kids so they could cut their own bagels and still have fingers left afterwards. Easy to use. Very good product,” says one five-star review.

“A few months ago, I had a stroke which leaves me slightly uncoordinated using my hands. Cutting open a bagel with a serrated bread knife suddenly felt awkward and unsafe. This simple device makes the task easy and safe,” says another.

Thanks to the genius of this bagel slicer, you can instantly cut your bagel in perfect halves without squashing or mangling it. Its guillotine design features a shield to keep your hands safe while a nonstick, Xylax-coated blade slices in one fell swoop — ultimately eliminating any uneven and messy cuts.

The Hoan Bagel Guillotine Slicer is backed by a solid 4.8-star rating and retails between $26 to $35.
