Britney Spears’s Father, Jamie, Finally Spoke Out About the #FreeBritney Movement

Britney Spears has lived her life in a fishbowl—with the public weighing in on her every move—since the release of her first album, …Baby One More Time, in 1999. Her triumphs, her struggles, her relationships, and of course, her music have been chronicled in the press and tabloids, and her rabid fanbase has never waned in their affection over the course of her career.

It seems like every few months the #FreeBritney movement bubbles up on social media. For those who don’t know what that is, it was started last year by fans who oppose the conservatorship Spears is currently under that gives her very little control over her legal affairs. (Click here for more information on the movement.) According to People, Britney's father, Jamie, stepped down as Britney’s permanent conservator due to “personal health reasons,” and her “care-manager,” Jodi Montgomery, temporarily took the role.

Jamie recently spoke out about the situation, people calling for Britney to be “freed,” and claims that he is stealing money from his daughter. “All these conspiracy theorists don’t know anything. The world don’t have a clue,” he told Page Six. “It’s up to the court of California to decide what’s best for my daughter. It’s no one else’s business.

“I have to report every nickel and dime spent to the court every year,” he continued. “How the hell would I steal something?”

Spears also spoke out about the aggressive behavior of a certain segment of Britney’s fanbase. “People are being stalked and targeted with death threats,” he said. “It’s horrible. We don’t want those kinds of fans.

"I love my daughter,” he said. “I love all my kids. But this is our business. It’s private.”

Britney Spears’s younger sister, Jamie Lynn, also recently spoke out in defense of the singer, shutting down a social media commenter who questioned her mental health.

“You have no right to assume anything about my sister. And I have no right to speak about HER health and personal matters,” she said. “She is a strong, badass, unstoppable woman, and that’s the only thing that is OBVIOUS.”
