Bronze incense urn stolen from Buddhist temple in Winnipeg

Winnipeg police are asking the public to help them locate a solid bronze incense urn that was stolen from a local Buddhist temple earlier this week.

The decorative urn, which is almost a metre tall and weighs about 136 kilograms, was taken from its mount on the front steps of the Huasing Temple at 585 Cumberland Ave. sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight on Monday.

Police told CBC News they are concerned that the thieves may melt down the metal.

The incense burning urn was brought to Winnipeg from Taiwan in 1995 and is of great significance to the temple.

Police say the urn, which features decorative phoenix birds on the bowl and figurine dragons as the handles, is believed to be worth about $8,000.

Anyone with information about the stolen urn is asked to call the Division 11 Crime Unit at 204-986-6668 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-8477.
