Brooklyn Nine-Nine star Andy Samberg has addressed how the show is approaching season 8 following George Floyd's death.

Floyd was killed in police custody, leading to widespread protests across the US calling for the police to be defunded or dismantled, as people continue to speak out against police brutality and systemic racism in law enforcement. Protests have also been happening internationally in support.

Speaking to People, Samberg said that the writers and cast are still figuring out how they can make a new season of the NBC sitcom – which centres on a group of cops portrayed as goofy and likeable heroes – that they can "feel morally okay" about.

"We're taking a step back, and the writers are all rethinking how we're going to move forward, as well as the cast," explained the Jake Peralta actor.

"We're all in touch and kind of discussing how you make a comedy show about police right now and if we can find a way of doing that that we all feel morally okay about.

"I know that we'll figure it out, but it's definitely a challenge. So we'll see how it goes."

Co-star Terry Crews recently confirmed that the show scrapped scripts for the first four episodes of the new season in the wake of Floyd's death.

"[The writers] had four episodes all ready to go, and they just threw them in the trash," he said last month. "We have to start over. Right now, we don't know which direction it's going to go in."

The comedy is expected to return to NBC this fall in the US.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine airs on NBC in the US. E4 aired season 7 in the UK, with seasons 1-6 available on Netflix.
