Man dies after botched robbery in Bruderheim bar

A man tried who tried to hold up a bar in Bruderheim, Alta., with a fake gun has died in hospital, two days after the robbery was thwarted by patrons who intervened.

Police say the robbery suspect died in hospital late Friday afternoon. An autopsy is scheduled for Monday afternoon.

The attempted robbery happened Wednesday. A waitress at the Bruderheim Hotel, who did not want to be identified, told CBC News a man walked into the lounge through the back door at around 11 p.m. that night.

He strolled up to the bar in a ski-type mask, holding what looked like a gun, and ordered her to empty the till, she said.

She handed about $500 in cash to the man, who she estimated was in his fifties or sixties.

At that point, two customers tackled the man and wrestled him onto a pool table.

By the time police arrived, the man was in critical condition, though police said they were not be certain why.

He was transported to hospital in Edmonton, where he died Friday.

The weapon used in the hold up turned out to be an imitation handgun.
