Vascular surgeon Andre Poirier is also an award-winning photographer, recently claiming top honours in the Master Photographers International Image Challenge for his photograph "Lavender Dreams".

“So many of my idols have won this award,” said Poirier, noting in particular renowned Australian photographer, Peter Lik, who has sold multiple photographs for over $1 million. Thirty-nine trophies are awarded per year by the organization, he said.

"Lavender Dreams", was taken in Provence, France in 2019. The photograph involved taking dozens of images and creating a composite of those images, he said. It took several hours to capture what he needed, he said, adding that he took photos from 1 to 5 a.m. in this case.

For photographs like this, everything is planned, he said. He goes to a site, plans what he needs and returns when the conditions will be ideal, said Poirier.

When he travels, he does so to take photos. “It’s like a treasure hunt,” he said. “When it all falls into place, it’s worth it.”

During the pandemic, Poirier has been taking shorter photography trips in the Maritimes.

“I haven’t had a week off in a year,” said Poirier, who practices at both The Moncton Hospital and the Dr-Georges-L.-Dumont University Hospital Centre. “It’s very hard to do my photography. I have to put in the extra effort.”

Three quarters of the time he considers his photos not good enough to show, he said.

This work is quite different from his work as a doctor and the balance created in his life by pursuing his passion for photography is important to him.

"Lavender Dreams" also earned Poirier an excellence award in the National Image Competition of the Professional Photographers of Canada earlier in 2021.

Poirier, who is from Grande-Digue and now lives in Grand-Barachois, has printed different sizes of the image, which are available at art galleries, including at Apple Art Gallery on St. George Street, Moncton.
