New Brunswick weather: rainfall warning for today, Saturday

New Brunswick weather: rainfall warning for today, Saturday

Heavy rainfall is expected over much of the Maritimes today and Saturday with between 40 mm and 75 mm possible, according to a rainfall warning issued by Environment Canada.

"However there is still some degree of uncertainty with respect to the location of heaviest rain," the statement reads.

"As is the case with most heavy rainfall situations, the total amount of rain is not necessarily the problem, but rather the rate at which the rain falls."

Environment Canada warns heavy downpours can cause flash floods or localized flooding in low-lying areas.

CBC meteorologist Jim Abraham said along with the heavy rain, strong southeast winds will also develop later on Friday.

"The rain along with southeast wind gusts as high as 70 km/h will continue tonight and Saturday before tapering to showers," Abraham said.

On Sunday, partial clearing is expected with strong southwest winds persisting. Abraham expects there may also be some spotty showers, especially over northern New Brunswick.

Temperatures will be above normal on Friday and Saturday, but drop to below normal for much of next week.
