Busy bees: Yukon's 'Wildlife Saving Club' starts postering

Yukon has a new group advocating for wildlife.

Canyon Simanis, 9 and Hailey Steinhagen, 10 are both students at Whitehorse Elementary.

They recently decided to start a Wildlife Saving Club.

So far they say about nine young people have joined.

Simanis and Steinhagen recently put up posters around Whitehorse. It gives contact information and a picture of a bee drawn by Grade 5 student Matthew Lunden.

"Imagine life without bees. No honey, no flowers and no healthy crops. Nothing! Join the Wildlife Saving Club and help raise money to save bees," it reads.

So far no money has been raised, however, the girls are pledging any funds will go to the Yukon Wildlife Preserve. It doesn't feature bees intentionally — though bees do live on the grounds of the preserve — but it does help rehabilitate injured wildlife.

"It'll go to the wildlife preserve to help them save more animals," Simanis explains.
