Bystanders help save man who fell into Lake Ontario overnight

A man was sent to hospital after falling accidentally into Lake Ontario overnight while walking on the boardwalk near the intersection of Queens Quay West and Harbour Square.

Const. Jenifferjit Sidhu of Toronto police told CBC Toronto that when the man fell just after 1 a.m., he began screaming — and three people who happened to be nearby came over to help.

The witnesses alerted authorities and put an emergency ladder into the water, getting the man to hold onto a tire mounted on the lake's edge and holding onto him as he remained in the water.

The man had lost consciousness when police, Toronto Fire Services, and paramedics arrived on the scene.

"We arrived and got him out of the water," said Capt. Adrian Ratushniak of Toronto Fire Services.

Ratushniak added that no boats were needed to pull the man out of the lake.

Sidhu said that when the man was revived on land, "he advised that he had no feeling in his arms or legs… he had been in the water for awhile."

Paramedics, who say the man was not in serious condition, loaded him into an ambulance and sent him to the hospital.
