A cafe in North Yorkshire has issued a statement apologising to a woman who was labelled a 'weird freak' on a receipt earlier this week.

The woman was with her husband, Steve Dempster, and their 11-month old son when they visited Weetons Food Hall in Harrogate on Monday for breakfast.

Mr Dempster told the Harrogate Advertiser that his wife had asked for a smaller omlette for their son to try.

"My wife used to work there and so she knows that if someone wants to order something off the menu you just put it through the till by typing it in a note to the chef," he said.

"At the time I think she was being served by the cafe manager who was training up a new member of staff. They went to type the request in and my wife noticed that the other member of staff sniggered, so she asked for a copy of the receipt."

When they received the receipt, the woman saw her order had been entered as "small egg & tom omlette for weird freak."

"It's utterly shocking that the cafe manager thinks they can do that in front of another member of staff and not think the customer will ever see it," Mr Dempster said.

Weetons General Manager Keren Shaw said: "Unfortunately today one of our staff acted in an incredibly unprofessional way and we are extremely sorry.

"It is not the high level of service that we know our customers expect from us and which we expect from our staff.

"We have made a direct apology to the customer concerned and will be taking up the matter internally with the staff involved.”
