Calgary entertainment: 5 things to do this Thanksgiving

The weather is going to be pretty amazing over the next few days. So after you stuff yourself with pumpkin pie, you can work it all off with a beautiful autumn hike in the Canadians Rockies.

Here are the Homestretch's Tracy Fuller's entertainment picks for in and around Calgary this Thanksgiving weekend.

1. Thanksgiving Pie Bake-off

Try four different pies and vote for your favourite from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m on Friday at the Calgary Farmers' Market. To participate, bring a cash or food donation for the Calgary Food Bank. All entries will have a chance to win a huge gift basket full of Thanksgiving goodies from the market.

2. Autumn hike in the Rockies

While the larch colours have come and gone, that should not deter you from heading to the mountains this weekend. The Lake Louise Visitor's Centre recommends the family-friendly Lake Agnes Tea House trail. If you're willing to commit half a day, four to five hours, go for the Plain of Six Glaciers — which also has the reward of a teahouse at the end. And if you want to stay closer to Calgary, there's always Barrier Lake in Kananaskis.

3. Bugs Bunny at the Symphony II

The Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a symphony in tandem with Bugs, Daffy, Elmer Fudd, Pepe Le Pew, Tweety and Sylvester — and of course the Roadrunner and Wile E. Coyote. The program includes classics like Baton Bunny and The Rabbit of Seville. Concerts are Oct. 9 at 7:30 p.m. and Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

4. Tanya Tagaq

The Polaris Music-Prize winning throat singer from Cambridge Bay, Nunuvut, has created a unique and original soundtrack to the Robert Flaherty's silent documentary Nanook of the North. The controversial 1922 film is about Inuit hunter Nanook and his family as they struggle to survive in the harsh conditions of Canada's Hudson Bay region. Tagaq has two performances, Oct. 9 and 10, at the Banff Centre.

5. Ria Mae

For some live music closer to home, Haligonian Ria Mae performs at MacEwan Hall on Oct. 9.
