Calgary entertainment: 5 things to do this weekend

1. Green Fools

The troupe has invited a puppet master from Iceland who who creates unexpected characters using only his hands and a piece of fabric.

You can see Bernd Ogrondnik's wildly inventive and often very moving performance May 29 at 7 p.m. at West Village Theatre in Sunalta.

2. Hidden Gems Film Festival

Nine movies in English, Tamil, Bengali and Hindi — but not to worry, there are subtitles for the non-English films. The festival runs from May 29 to 31 and June 7 to 9 at ACAD.

3. Alligator Pie

For the first time, Dennis Lee's award-winning collection of children's poetry is being set to music in a world premiere performance by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra.

The show is Sunday, May 31 at 3 p.m. at the Jack Singer Concert Hall.

4. Cowtown Opera

Set in Calgary during the 1988 Winter Olympics, Love Potion No.9 will give you a dose of 80s fashion and music, such as Bonnie Tyler's I Need a Hero (performed operatically, of course). Tickets for the May 29 performance are sold out but there are still some available for the 7:30 p.m. show on May 30 and the 2:30 p.m. matinee at Festival Hall in Inglewood.

5. Funnyfest

More than 30 comedians are in the city for the next week, performing hilarious (and often inappropriate) stand-up.

The festival, now in its 15th year, is taking place from May 28 until June 7 at various venues in Calgary.
