1. The Calgary International Children's Festival

Outdoor activities at Olympic Plaza from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 23.

2. Calgary Reads Book Sale

The sale runs 9 a.m. to 9 p.m on May 22 and from 9 a.m. to midnight on May 23 at the Calgary Curling Club, which is located at 720 Third Street N.W. All money raised supports literacy in the city.

Kids can show up in their pajamas from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday to snack on Girl Guide cookies and milk and listen to bedtime stories. Adults take over at 9 p.m. for date night. And yes, there will be wine. Bring cash for the bar!

3. Fairy Tales Queer Film Festival

The Retro Gala Party will feature the 2001 cinematic adaptation of the Broadway hit, Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Dress code: punk rock glamour. Screening starts at 9 p.m. on May 23 at the Plaza Theatre and will be followed by some live local performances.

4. The music of Beethoven

Mountain View Connection is performing the 32 piano sonatas of Beethoven this spring. This concert is part three of the nine-concert series and is happening at 8 p.m. May 23 at Christ Church, located at 3602 Eighth Street S.W. Tickets are available here.

5. 'Psychobilly' music

Mix rockabilly with speed metal and you get 'psychobilly.' Reverend Horton Heat, a rocker from Texas, was an early pioneer of the genre. You can catch him at Dickens Pub on May 24 (the May 23 show is sold out).
